family of innkeepers look back as they prepare to move on

Erich and Edna Griesser, the owners of the Alpine Inn--which is situated in the heart of the pristine Catskill Forest Preserve--, have decided to move on. Having operated the Alpine Inn for seventy years, the Griesser Family realizes that now is the time to pass the torch to a new owner.

In many ways, the Griessers symbolize the end of an era and changing face of upstate New York. The long-established, much-admired old guard of Innkeepers is preparing to transfer ownership and convey their knowledge, experience and reputation to a new generation of entrepreneurs who want to continue the region's widely-praised tradition of hospitality.

"The success of the Inn enabled us to send our children to excellent universities which in turn fostered their special interests and talents," says Erich Griesser. "Though our three sons are exploring their professional interests, they and friends are working with us to develop a whole site plan so that the new owners can expand the Inn and add a first rate spa and conference facility."

It's hard not to think you're in nirvana when you sit on the deck at the Alpine Inn and look out at the mountains that surround you. Despite all the comforts and modern conveniences and being only two and one half hours from Manhattan, when you are at the Alpine Inn, it still seems as if the hustle and bustle of New York City and the angst of modern society is a million miles away.

"Most people don't realize that the environmental movement in America was born in this part of the world by people who lived here like 19th Century poet and environmentalist John Burroughs," says Edna Griesser. "The Catskills in many ways, since the decline of big resorts in the 1950s, have gotten a bad reputation. But what most people don't realize is that the Catskill Forest Preserve is still intact. And most of what was traditionally considered the Catskills is not within the protected area within the preserve"

Here in the heart of the Preserve the Alpine Inn sits on 69 pristine mountainside acres, yet is only thirty minutes from the bustling country village of Woodstock. When you are here, your problems disappear and the awe of the natural beauty transports you away. Recent sales and developments in the area indicate that this little part of the world is quickly becoming a hotspot. The nearby Peekamoose restaurant was recently renovated and opened by a hip young couple who spent a decade working at the hottest restaurants in NYC. They transformed a defunct country restaurant into a laid back, but elegant dining destination.

And, only a few miles away, the posh Cross Roads development, adjacent to state-owned Belleayre Mountain Ski Resort, is planned. The Griessers' Alpine Inn is situated in a prime spot. "This is the best location there is," says Edna Griesser matter-of-factly, without boasting. "Just look," she says. And, with a sweep of the hand directing your attention to the serene landscape that surrounds you, Edna sums up the Alpine Inn experience succinctly, "It doesn't get any better than this."
